A towel, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.
Towel Day is celebrated every May 25th.
In 2009 Towel Day fell on Memorial Day. I was lucky enough to have a US Flag towel. I traveled from 42nd & 12th to Broadway, up Broadway to Central Park, walked through most of the lower park area, over to the Apple Store on Fifth, took the train to Coney Island, walked all over the place looking for fellow Towel Travelers and found none, other than that strange guy trying to hitch a ride under a Martian Spaceship.
In 2010, same strange traveler gets onto a Downtown 6 Train and is joined by two Towel Travelers in the same car! Go figure. Finally we see our hero with his same trusty Towel in one of his favorite bars waiting for his Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster.
2011 was interesting. I found some Alien trying to capture a child with some type of bubble device, the Douglas Adams book section at the Barnes & Noble and that my friend Paul also celebrates Towel Day.
2012 I found that our local Long Trail Brewery rep was into Towel Day.
2013 saw the return of my American Flag Towel. It was buried in storage from my move last year (That's why 2012 saw the Yellow & Blue one.) Lindy is from Australia and was visiting from the UK. Erin lives in New York City. All three of us were supposed to meet a large group to form a DNA 42, but the rest of the group left early because of inclement weather and didn't leave word for us. Bad Hitchhikers! No biscuits for you!
2014 was a wonderful celebration at The Way Station in Brooklyn, but on the way I encountered a strange ape descendant balancing some glass elements on the subway. I think he was trying to fashion some type of time machine. He got off before I could investigate further. Once at The Way Station they showed almost all of the BBC TV episodes throughout the day. When I got home, one of my doormen for my building was sporting a Towel. I had told him about it the year before, and he got into it for 2014.
Towel Day 2015 started out with breakfast with my friend Ruth. I of course ordered the English Breakfast Tea. I then traveled all over Manhattan looking for other Towels to no avail. All over Central Park, the Apple Store, Union Square, Washington Square Park. Nothing until I got to The Way Station where they showed The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy movie.
